PASSOVER
PREPARATIONS
LUKE
22:7-13
Luke
22:7 Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed.
MacArthur
Study Bible
22:7
the Day of Unleavened Bread. I.e., the first day of the feast season (see note
on Matt. 26:17). The people from Galilee celebrated the Passover on Thursday
evening (see Introduction to John: Interpretive Challenges) so the lambs were
killed in the afternoon of that day. The disciples and Jesus ate the Passover
meal that evening, after sundown, (when Passover officially began). Judeans
would follow this same sequence one day later on Friday.
Susan: MacArthur’s
comment helps us to understand why Jesus observed Passover on the night of His
arrest which was Thursday, but it is also appropriate to say He was crucified on
the day the Passover meal was eaten on Friday. Jesus, being from Nazareth in Galilee
observed the feast on Thursday while those from Jerusalem in Judea celebrated
it the night He died.
Luke
22:8-9 And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the Passover, that
we may eat. And
they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare?
Susie: Luke
is the only Gospel writer who identifies the two disciples who asked where to
prepare the meal as Peter and John. Matthew and Mark simple call them disciples
(Matthew 26:17, Mark 14:13).
Luke
22:10-12 And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city,
there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the
house where he entereth in. And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The
Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the
passover with my disciples? And he
shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready.
Susie: Mark
and Luke both report the prophecy Jesus made concerning the man carrying water.
The man would stand out because carrying jugs of water from the well was a task
almost always carried out by women.
Susan: Although
Jesus may have pre-arranged with the home owner to celebrate the Passover meal
in his upper room, the only way He could have known the exact time of day the
male servant would be bringing water from the well was by His divine
omniscience.
Susie: We
read in commentaries that a customary practice for those who lived in Jerusalem
was to provide rooms for families from out of town to celebrated the Passover
meal.
Luke
22:13 And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready
the passover.
Susan: Everything
Jesus had said to Peter and John came to pass exactly has He had prophetically depicted
the scene.
Susie: Peter
and John went to work having a perfect lamb slaughtered and prepared for the
meal as well as purchasing the other necessary items such as unleavened bread
and wine.
Ponder
this and Apply it: In this passage, we see Jesus’s omniscience—the
fact that He knows and sees everything—as He tells Peter and John exactly what
they will encounter upon entering Jerusalem. Everything about Jesus’s last few
days ministering as the God-Man on earth was foreknown to the Father, Son, and
Spirit. Jesus was fully God as well as fully man and knew for certain the
disciples would find the man carrying water. We can take great comfort in the
fact that our Lord knows and sees everything that transpires in our lives and
works all circumstances for our good and His glory. No matter what you are
going through right this moment, be confident that Jesus sees, cares, and only
allows those things into His child’s life that are for the ultimate best. By
the way, lest you think this is easy for us to remember right now:
·
Susie’s sister is in rehab due to a recent
stroke
·
Susie has a horribly itchy skin problem on both
arms and legs that doctors have not been able to diagnose
·
Susan has been battling severe leg spasms and a
sore rib
·
Both Susan and Susie are having a rough time
sleeping at night
·
Finances have been difficult
